2015 DARREL CHONG AWARD

IEEE USM Student Branch won Silver in Darrel Chong Student Activity Award. The award serves to recognize activities orchestrated by IEEE bodies around the world that bring much impact to society.

We have been awarded for the success in one of our flagship events, namely Techmentor. Techmentor is an initiative based on volunteer teaching, where facilitators called Techmentors will be trained beforehand to impart them with the necessary knowledge to guide participating secondary school students. Several Techmentors will be responsible for facilitating the participating teams in terms of teaching and technical support, and to prepare the team for a competition which will be held toward the end of the project.

BEST STUDENT BRANCH AWARD 2015

USM IEEE Student Branch has been awarded as best student branch for year 2015, which marks our second win of the award since 2013. The award was received by our counselor, Dr Rosmiwati during IEEE Malaysia Section AGM Dinner at the Pullman Hotel Bangsar. Thanks to IEEE Malaysia Section, counselor Dr Rosmiwati Mohd Mokhtar, chapters, other student branches, committees and the members of USM IEEE Student Branch for making this comes true. This is definitely another great milestone for USM IEEE Student Branch.

IEEE MALAYSIA STUDENT LEADERSHIP AWARD 2015

The IEEE Malaysia Student Leadership Award 2015 was awarded to then Chairman, Tan Ting Feng, as an appreciation towards his diligence and commitment in leading IEEE USM Student Branch and coordinating impactful activities that stays true towards IEEE’s core values and vision. Among the events coordinated by Ting Feng was Engagement with IEEE 2014SCOReD 2014Maple & Maplesim WorkshopProfessional Development Talk for Electrical & Electronic Engineers, and 3D Printing Workshop in collaboration with Penang Science Cluster.

BEST VOLUNTEER AWARD 2014

In conjunction with the 25th Annual General Meeting, IEEE Malaysia Section organized the IEEE Malaysia Section Annual Appreciation and Award Night on the 17th January 2015 at Palm Garden Hotel, IOI Resort, Putrajaya, Malaysia. Special awards were given to the most active chapters and student branches for the year 2014, outstanding volunteer/YP/WIE and the bonus cheques to the eligible chapters.

Malaysian Section Student Representative, Yeoh Hong Boon had been awarded third place for Best Volunteer Award 2014.

2014 IEEE STUDENT CONFERENCE ON RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

IEEE USM Student Branch in collaboration with IEEE Malaysia Section has organized the 22nd IEEE Student Conference on Research and Development (SCOReD 2014), which was successfully held on 16th & 17th of December at Park Royal Hotel Penang. It provides a unique platform for students and researchers to share their experience and views in their latest research and breakthroughs. It is created upon the idea of promoting Asia Pacific as the center of Electrical and Electronics excellence in this region and to prompt the research development activities amongst student researches.

IEEE SCOReD 2014 is the biggest event organised by IEEE Malaysia Section, USM IEEE Student Branch and the School of Electrical and Eletronic Engineering from University Science Malaysia in 2014. Collaboration between USM IEEE Student Branch undergraduates and lectures and professors from the university itself, this main conference is to provide a unique platform for students and researchers to share their experience and views in their latest research and breakthroughs.

Before the event itself, the promo video and the designation of the poster was created to promote the IEEE SCOReD 2014 to the public. To boost the popularity of the event itself, IEEE SCOReD  2014 website was set up by the multimedia department of IEEE SCOReD 2014. A youtube channel was also included as one of medium to reach to the public.

Call for papers for the event was announced and the deadline for it was 15th October 2014. Interest researchers were notified to submit their papers through EDAS system. Meanwhile, reminders had been sent to the confirmed reviewers regarding the due date of reviewing papers too.

On the event date itself (16-17th December 2014), Park Royal Hotel, Batu Ferringhi Penang was flooded with participants. In total, there were 59 papers presenter attended the IEEE SCOReD Conference 2014. There were 4 keynote speakers of engineering background invited for the IEEE SCOReD Conference 2014. The overall flow of the event was run smoothly according to the event schedule. The event was indeed an opportunities for all presenters to share their research findings through Technical Session and publish through the IEEE Xplore.

During the event, some of the talented USM IEEE Student Branch did exhibit their own personal electronic projects to the public. The main showcase from USM IEEE Student Branch is the 6 LED matrix cube. It was created by using Arduino Nano and soldered with LED that were linked together by USB cable.

Finally, the event was concluded with a final thanks to all participants and committee members of the event.

1ST RUNNER UP IN YOUNG INNOVATE MALAYSIA COMPETITION 2014

Young Innovate is a national-level STEM-based design competition open to secondary schools in Malaysia. Participants are requested to build an embedded system to solve real-life problems with the guidance from universities undergraduates as their mentors. From this competition,  the Chung Ling High School team guided by mentor from USM IEEE student branch has got 1st runner up in their project.

IEEE XTREME PROGRAMMING CHALLENGE 2014

2 teams from IEEE USM Student Branch obtained first and second place in Malaysia, and 95th and 332th at International level. Among the competitors are 2267 teams competing worldwide, 34 teams competing at National level and 6 teams were from Universiti Sains Malaysia

The IEEEXtreme 8.0 programming competition was conducted worldwide from 18 October to 19 October 2014. With the vision and mission of bringing in more impactful technical events to USM IEEE Student Branch, USM IEEE Student Branch had successfully introduced a global online challenge which was actively participated by teams of USM students. There are 2267 teams competing worldwide, 34 teams competing at National level and 6 teams were from Universiti Sains Malaysia. USM IEEE Student Branch had organized the event for the first time ever and the venue was took place at the Micro-computer Lab, School of Electrical & Electronic Engineering, USM.

During the 24 hours competition, the participants have been given 22 real world problems to be solved. Knowledge, brain storming and high commitment were required in solving the programming problem correctly and on time. Although this global online challenge was launched for the first time ever in USM, 2 teams from USM managed to secure first and second place in Malaysia, and 95th and 332th at International level. It was certainly a proud moment for USM IEEE Student Branch.

We sincerely thank our 3 proctors who are the IEEE members on duty to monitor the flow of the competition together with the student members. They are Dr. Muhammad Nasiruddin Mahyuddin, Dr. Rosmiwati Mohd Mokhtar and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Shahrel Azmin Sundi. Also, thanks to the Technician on duty, Mr. Kamarulzaman Abu Bakar who was also involved in making sure the technical aspects of the lab where the competition was conducted were problem free. The achievement would have been impossible without the full support of the Dean of School of Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Prof. Dr. Mohd Zaid Abdullah, academics, technicians and administrative staff of the school.
