As one of the annual event for IEEE USM Student Branch, Makerthon 2018 has been joined by more than 50 participants from USM Engineering Campus. Participants spent almost 60 hours continuously, from tinkering till building a prototype for solution of the problems they faced daily and lastly presented to judging panel formed by prestigious academicians and industrial engineers. This event is indeed a great challenge for participants as they have to work in team and think creatively in a short period in order to stand out among others.
IEEE USM Student Branch won Silver in Darrel Chong Student Activity Award. The purpose of this recognition system serves to change the mindset of our student groups, from being number-driven, to becoming value-driven and to acknowledge exemplary student activities around the world. The goal is to improve the quality of activities, and to foster knowledge sharing among students. Ultimately, the initiative is targeted at improving student-membership growth. This will encourage and motivate students to continue to innovate and implement meaningful ideas.
We have been awarded for the success in one of our flagship events, namely Techmentor. Techmentor is an initiative based on volunteer teaching, where facilitators called Techmentors will be trained beforehand to impart them with the necessary knowledge to guide participating secondary school students. Several Techmentors will be responsible for facilitating the participating teams in terms of teaching and technical support, and to prepare the team for a competition which will be held toward the end of the project.

We have been awarded for the success in one of our flagship events, namely Tech Mentors Education Project. Tech Mentors is a volunteering program carried out by the undergraduate students of USM based on the mission to inspire the young generation through designing creative innovations with embedded systems. It focuses on practical learning which involves hands-on and group discussion where students learn how to construct an embedded system by applying what they learn during the training on necessary software. The facilitators called Tech Mentors will obtain training from industries (provided by Dreamcatcher) to guide participating secondary school students. They are guided to build their own embedded system projects using soldering skills, circuit design and C++ programming. Several Tech mentors will be responsible to facilitate the participating teams in terms of teaching, technical support and to prepare the team for the grand challenge called the Young Innovate Malaysia Competition.
Tan Kah Hooi (ex- Head Of R & D Department) received R10 EA Outstanding Volunteer Award-2016. He is the main person in charge and volunteer for Techmentor Malaysia which is an event where the volunteers guide secondary school students on learning Arduino and leading them to the final competition which is Young Innovate Malaysia Competition 2014. As the main person in charge of Stem Outreach, Tan Kah Hooi and his team visited secondary schools or primary schools to introduce fun and interesting science projects to them.Next, Tan Kah Hooi is active in creating R&D projects and showcasing them at various exhibitions. For instance, the exhibition at Penang Science Cluster Openeng, Wisma Openang and Penang International Science Fair.
