Learn from the cream – IEEE International Microwave, Electron Devices & Solid-State Circuit Symposium (IMESS) 2019

International Microwave, Electron Devices & Solid-State Circuit Symposium (IMESS) is organized by IEEE Malaysia ED/MTT/SSC Penang Joint Chapter and PSDC on 8th and 9th October 2019. IMESS is a platform to exhibit product and technology solutions and networking and exchanging ideas with peers and experts. The purpose of the event is to promote and strengthen local science and engineering advancements.

Besides, networking opportunities and is provided through the event to connect technical communities. In addition, it is also to address polarization issues within the industry and academia. With this, it can help to synchronize and bridge the gap between industry advancement and academic research.

There are more than 30 members from IEEE USM Student Branch joined IEEE International Microwave, Electron Devices & Solid-State Circuit Symposium (IMESS) 2019 as student participants at Penang Skills Development Center, PSDC.

Besides gaining knowledge about the latest technology like AI, IoT and 5G from professionals, participants also had the opportunity to visit Plexus Penang Design Center to know more about the industry.

Makerthon 2019 – Innovating Life

Makerthon = Maker + Marathon. The Makerthon is an event where people from different backgrounds meet to face a real-life challenge by searching for new ideas, solutions, products and services. The Makerthon had been successfully conducted by IEEE USM Student Branch and collaborated with WIE USM Student Branch and also IEEE UniMAP Student Branch from 11th October 2019 to 13th October 2019. This event provides a platform for the participants to show their creativity and make an innovative prototype that can solve real-life problems.

Before the competition, the participants had gone through a few workshops to equip them with the necessary knowledge and skill. Arduino Beginner Workshop and Solidworks Workshop were conducted on 3rd October 2019. The former introduces the participants about Arduino while the latter taught about the 3D CAD software tool. Wireless Communication Workshop and Arduino Intermediate Workshop were also carried out on 10th October 2019. After the workshop, the participants would be more confident to design a product to solve our daily life problems.

There were 16 groups participated, consisting of a group of four each, from USM and UniMAP. Makerthon was carried out for three days. In the first two days, which were 11th October 2019 and 12th October 2019, participants were given a task to brain-storming their ideas on solving the problems in daily life and prepare their prototype. The participants developed their projects at EEK3 in School of Electrical And Electronics. The participants showed the importance of teamwork on developing the projects. There were facilitators available to help the students when they encountered any problem.

On the final day, the competition was held at Dewan Serbaguna USM. the participants presented their prototype on a group basis. They showed how their prototype works and also explained how their ideas can solve real-life problems. At the same time, they were also persuading the judges on their project’s advantages. A Q&A session was carried out by the judges for the queries on the participants’ prototypes. Makerthon was carried out successfully and fulfilled the objectives of the event.

Two groups from UniMAP successfully emerged as the champion and 1st runner-up in Makerthon 2019 competition. The champion was won by SCCE group from SCCE UniMAP with the title ‘Biometric Attendance System’ presented by Nurul Izzati binti Abdul Muthalib, Nur Hafizah Iffah binti Azhar, Tanussia a/p Muniandy, and Wan Nursharina binti Hayadee. While the second place was won by another team from IEEE UniMAP Student Branch which consists of four Biomedical Electronic Engineering students from School of Mechatronic Engineering, who were Muhamad Syamir Bin Azhar, Muhammad Amin Bin Rusdi, Iffa Nadia Bt Mohd Nasir and Thivya A/P Baskaran with their developed project, ‘Driving Monitoring Project’. Second runner-up was won by team X-Inventor from USM Engineering Campus with their project named ‘Smart House’.

The event would not be a success without all the sponsors especially our platinum sponsor, Greatech Integration (M) Sdn Bhd. A great thanks to our silver sponsor, Micro Modular System Sdn Bhd and also our angel sponsor, Cytron Technologies Sdn Bhd. Their support was an essential part of Makerthon being able to run smoothly and create a wonderful experience for the participant. All groups paid their hard work and presented their creative ideas on solving the problems in daily life.

modified Engagement Day 001

Learn while having fun? IEEE USM SB opens the opportunity to all on Engagement Day 19/20.

Nothing more exciting than treasuring into new things, meeting new people and being inspired. On the 19th of September 2019, IEEE USM Student Branch had organized engagement day to introduce what is IEEE and what we are doing. More than 100 students from all the courses in USM Engineering Campus participated in the event. The goal of the event is to encourage students to be a part of the club, mainly to foster technological innovation and excellence for the benefit of humanity.

The event started with a speech delivered by the chair, Lin Jian Wen. The head of each department explained briefly about the job scope of each department and shared their experience about the past events. Students were given the opportunity for being a member of IEEE as well as being a committee of IEEE by filling the application form that night.

The participants also played some mini-games with committee members. A few mystery letters were placed in the campus library before the event. For those who successfully found the letter, they were given a gift on the event day. All the winners were given prizes. There was also a lucky draw session. Projects done by IEEE committees also exhibited on that day.

Lastly, we conducted a mini Q&A session for the participants. Engagement Day was the very first step to acknowledge students about the existence of our club. IEEE USM Student Branch would like to thank all the participants. Stay tuned for more interesting and beneficial events that will be conducted by us.

2017 DARREL CHONG STUDENT ACTIVITY AWARD

IEEE USM Student Branch won Silver in Darrel Chong Student Activity Award. The purpose of this recognition system serves to change the mindset of our student groups, from being number-driven, to becoming value-driven and to acknowledge exemplary student activities around the world. The goal is to improve the quality of activities, and to foster knowledge sharing among students. Ultimately, the initiative is targeted at improving student-membership growth. This will encourage and motivate students to continue to innovate and implement meaningful ideas.

We have been awarded for the success in one of our flagship events, namely Techmentor. Techmentor is an initiative based on volunteer teaching, where facilitators called Techmentors will be trained beforehand to impart them with the necessary knowledge to guide participating secondary school students. Several Techmentors will be responsible for facilitating the participating teams in terms of teaching and technical support, and to prepare the team for a competition which will be held toward the end of the project.

2016 DARREL CHONG STUDENT ACTIVITY AWARD

USM IEEE Student Branch won Gold in Darrel Chong Student Activity Award. The award serves to recognize activities orchestrated by IEEE bodies around the world that bring much impact to society.

We have been awarded for the success in one of our flagship events, namely Tech Mentors Education Project. Tech Mentors is a volunteering program carried out by the undergraduate students of USM based on the mission to inspire the young generation through designing creative innovations with embedded systems. It focuses on practical learning which involves hands-on and group discussion where students learn how to construct an embedded system by applying what they learn during the training on necessary software. The facilitators called Tech Mentors will obtain training from industries (provided by Dreamcatcher) to guide participating secondary school students. They are guided to build their own embedded system projects using soldering skillscircuit design and C++ programming. Several Tech mentors will be responsible to facilitate the participating teams in terms of teaching, technical support and to prepare the team for the grand challenge called the Young Innovate Malaysia Competition.
